Sustainable Investing For Private Clients: Innovations For Advisors

CFA Institute surveys of high net worth investors in 2018 revealed that 11% cite sustainable investing as a priority, with significant skews towards greater interest by females, investors with more than $10 million in investable assets, and younger investors. Indeed, 30% of younger investors surveyed indicated this as a priority. As client demand for sustainable investment strategies emerges and grows, advisors have struggled to make sense of the landscape and make informed decisions on behalf of their clients.

This workshop will explore the current state of practice in this fast-growing area and preview innovations in tools and resources becoming available to advisors. William Burckart, President of The Investment Integration Project and co-author of the recently released Fundamentals of Sustainable Investment: A guide for financial advisors will discuss practical solutions to finding the right way to discover client interests and priorities and translate them into actionable ideas;  Richard Smyers of Fidelity Labs (the R&D arm of Fidelity) will discuss breakthroughs in tools for advisors to best integrate sustainable investing strategies within their existing portfolio management structures. A facilitated discussion with participants will follow in which practitioner questions will be addressed, preferences for future innovations explored, and ideas for integrating sustainable investing into the spectrum of advisor capabilities considered.
